The Nine Arches Bridge in Ella, Sri Lanka — the destination of the Colombo to Ella transfer

Most people who message me about Sri Lanka for the first time have Ella somewhere on the list. They’ve seen the photos — the train on the old stone bridge, the green hills going on forever — and they want to get there. The standard question is: how do I get from Colombo (or the airport) to Ella, and is it worth doing in one go?

The short answer is yes, it’s doable in a day, but you need to start early and accept that it’s a real drive. About 205 km on the map and 5 to 7 hours behind the wheel, depending on which line we take and how much traffic we hit on the way out of Colombo.

The route I usually take

Most of my Colombo-to-Ella runs go the southern inland way: out of Colombo on the A4 — the long Colombo–Ratnapura–Wellawaya road that eventually runs all the way to Batticaloa — through Ratnapura, Pelmadulla, Balangoda, and Beragala. From Beragala the route turns up into the hill country via Haputale and Bandarawela before dropping into Ella. It’s the most direct line.

The other option is via Kandy — A1 to Kandy, then the hill country roads down via Nuwara Eliya. It’s longer (closer to 7 to 8 hours), but it lets you break the trip in Kandy if you want. If you’re coming straight off a long-haul flight, this isn’t the day to add Kandy. Save it for the trip back.

What it looks like on the way

The first hour is the hardest — getting clear of Colombo’s outskirts on the A4 takes patience, particularly on weekday mornings. Once we hit Ratnapura, the road opens up. Ratnapura is Sri Lanka’s gem-cutting town; if you’re curious I can stop somewhere reputable, otherwise we keep moving.

Balangoda, about halfway, is the natural lunch stop. There are a few places I trust for a quick rice and curry — nothing fancy, but you’ll be eating what locals on this road eat.

The last hour is the prettiest. Between Beragala and Bandarawela the road climbs through tea estates, the air cools off, and you start seeing the hill-country landscape that Ella sits inside. By the time we drop into Ella town, you’re at about 1,000 metres and the temperature has dropped maybe ten degrees from where we started.

Practical bit

  • Start early. I aim to leave Colombo by 6am for this run. The Colombo morning peak between 7 and 10 can add an hour or more.
  • Airport pickup works the same way. Bandaranaike International (CMB) is north of Colombo, so the drive is broadly the same length — sometimes a touch less when we hit the Outer Circular and bypass the city centre.
  • One stop, two stops, three? Up to you. I plan around 5 to 7 hours of driving and however many breaks you want on top. Most people want lunch in Balangoda and one tea or toilet stop.
  • Hill country weather. Even in the dry season, Ella often has cloud or mist in the afternoon. It’s part of the appeal. Bring a light layer.

FAQ

Can you do an airport pickup straight to Ella? Yes — this is one of my most common runs. I’ll meet you at arrivals in Bandaranaike (CMB) with a sign and we go straight. Total drive from the airport is around 5 to 6 hours plus stops. WhatsApp me your flight number and arrival time and I’ll be there.

Is it better to drive or take the train to Ella? Different trips. The Kandy-to-Ella train is one of Asia’s great rail journeys — but it doesn’t get you from Colombo to Ella in one go. Most people who want both: I drive them up to Kandy, they take the train Kandy to Ella, I meet them again in Ella with the car for the next leg. We can plan it that way if you want.

Is the road safe? Yes, but it’s a working country road, not an expressway. The hill country section between Beragala and Ella is winding and narrow in places. I drive it most weeks; the car is in good condition and I don’t rush. Reliable phone signal most of the way too.

Can I stop in Ratnapura to look at gems? If you want to, yes. I’ll take you to a reputable cutter rather than the tourist showrooms — Ratnapura’s real gem trade happens in modest workshops. Tell me upfront and I’ll add 45 minutes to the day.

How much does it cost? Pricing depends on the vehicle, how many of you are travelling, and what stops you want. WhatsApp me with your details and I’ll quote — usually within an hour.
