Fishing boats on the shore at Arugam Bay, Sri Lanka, seen from the air
📍 Eastern Province 🗓 Best time: June–September (peak surf) ⚠ Seasonal — May to October

Arugam Bay is on the east coast. If you’ve been on the south coast or in the hill country, the first thing you’ll notice is that everything is different: the climate, the landscape, the light, the pace. The east coast runs drier and sunnier through the same months that the southwest monsoon is sitting over the south and west. It’s a different Sri Lanka.

The bay itself is a right-hand point break that has been turning up on lists of the world’s best surf spots for decades. The main break — usually called A-Bay — peels for a long way in the right conditions. It works best from June to September, when the southeast swell is running and the winds cooperate.

The surf

The main point at A-Bay is the headline act — a long, fast right-hander that can handle multiple skill levels depending on the swell size. There are several other breaks around the bay: Pottuvil Point to the north is longer and less crowded; Whisky Point, further along the coast, is mellower and good for intermediate surfers.

The season is roughly May to October. Outside these months the winds shift and the east coast gets rough — most surf-focused accommodation closes down for the off-season. If you’re coming for the surf, June to September is the window.

Beyond the surf

Arugam Bay is small — a single main road running alongside the beach, a few dozen guesthouses and restaurants, not a lot else. That’s most of the appeal. It has the energy of a surf town that hasn’t been overrun: friendly, relatively cheap, easy to spend a week in without trying.

Kumana National Park is about 20km south and is one of Sri Lanka’s most underrated parks. It’s a bird sanctuary first — one of Asia’s important wetland habitats for migratory birds — but it also has a resident leopard population and is significantly less visited than Yala. If you’re in Arugam Bay for more than a couple of days, Kumana is worth a morning.

Pottuvil Lagoon on the north side of town is good for a sunrise paddle or a slow boat through mangroves and waterways. Crocodiles are a fixture; so are various herons, egrets, and kingfishers.

Elephant Rock — a flat rock formation near the lagoon where elephants sometimes come to drink at dawn. The timing isn’t guaranteed but it happens often enough to be worth an early morning if you’re here for a few days.

The drive from the south

Getting to Arugam Bay from the south coast is a full-day drive — roughly 5 to 6 hours from Galle through the dry zone interior of the island. The drive passes through flat scrub jungle and small towns that most tourists never see, which I find interesting in its own right. Some people fly into Batticaloa and drive down the coast, which is shorter.

FAQ

When is the season in Arugam Bay? May to October is the surf season and when most things are open. June to September is the peak, when the swell is most consistent. November to April is the off-season — the northeast monsoon affects the east coast, the sea is rough, and a number of places close. Some travellers visit in the shoulder months (May, October) for smaller crowds.

Do I need to surf to enjoy Arugam Bay? No. The lagoon, Kumana National Park, the leopards, and the laid-back town atmosphere have nothing to do with surfing. That said, if you’re not surfing, it’s a long drive for a beach town — it makes most sense as part of a circuit of the island rather than a standalone trip.

Is Kumana National Park worth it compared to Yala? For birds, Kumana is arguably better. For leopards, Yala has more sightings because it has more visitors and more jeeps tracking the animals. Kumana is less predictable but far less crowded. If you’re already in Arugam Bay, Kumana is an easy yes.

How long is the drive from Colombo or the south coast? From Colombo it’s about 5–7 hours depending on route and traffic. From Galle or the south coast, similar. This is not a quick trip — build it into a wider east coast or circuit itinerary rather than treating it as a day trip from the south.
